The final report of the project “Building capacity for best practices in the voluntary carbon market” summarises key insights from the events held between August 2023 and September 2024. These events were designed to help Nordic stakeholders understand and implement best practices for voluntary carbon markets. They informed Nordic stakeholders about the latest international and national developments in the field and provided an interactive platform to discuss their implementation. While these events were mainly tailored for Nordic stakeholders, their insights are relevant across the world and were also shared with the international community via international webinars, the Nordic Dialogue website.
This report was published by the Nordic Council of Ministers.

The final report of the Dialogue first discusses how the voluntary use of carbon credits can promote climate action. It outlines the Nordic perspectives on best practice for the voluntary use of carbon credits including a Nordic Code of Best Practice (“Code”). The Code provides a Nordic perspective on the current best practice for the voluntary use of carbon credits, synthesising ambitious requirements and recommendations put forward by relevant initiatives as well as inputs from Nordic stakeholders. The report derives some recommendations for further Nordic cooperation on promoting best practice for the voluntary use of carbon credits.
This report was published by the Nordic Council of Ministers and prepared under the Nordic Dialogue on Voluntary Compensation.

A new Nordic report “Voluntary compensation of greenhouse gas emissions – International guidance and initiatives” explores the use of voluntary compensation by non-state actors in the context of their broader efforts towards and beyond carbon neutrality. These efforts could help to raise ambition which is urgently needed to achieve the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees. Ambition-raising will be a key theme of the COP26 climate conference, which takes place in Glasgow from 31 October to 12 November.
This report maps key international guidance and initiatives relevant to the voluntary use of carbon credits, fostering a common knowledge base on the high-integrity use of carbon credits as part of broader mitigation efforts towards and beyond carbon neutrality.

Many Nordic non-state actors are taking voluntary action to contribute to global efforts to combat climate change, within and beyond their boundaries and value chains. Buying carbon credits from the voluntary carbon market is one way to support climate change mitigation beyond the value chain. This report summarises key insights from a series of Nordic capacity building events on best practices for the voluntary carbon market, drawing on the results and recommendations of the Nordic Dialogue on Voluntary Compensation. It provides an overview of the latest international and national developments and key issues discussed in the events.
