The event aimed to raise awareness of the current status of green claims guidance and EU legislation, identify and exchange views on key open issues, and discuss ways to address them.

On 12 June 2024, an online event on voluntary offsetting claims was organised for Swedish stakeholders. The workshop explored how the use of carbon credits for voluntary offsetting is affected by the agreed EU ban on product-level offsetting claims, and how, going forward, actors can support climate projects through the purchase of carbon credits and communicate about it.

The message was clear: while participation in voluntary carbon markets is and will remain optional, ensuring integrity is not. Integrity is also key to unlocking private finance at scale. The role of regulation received increasing attention in these discussions. Several major initiatives on voluntary carbon markets were announced at COP27.

The Nordic Dialogue on Voluntary Compensation, which was launched in June 2021 with funding from the Nordic Council of Ministers, has been highly active in the last months, culminating in the establishment of a working group, the launch of a Nordic report on voluntary compensation and several events at the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow. The initiative has been recognised as one of the initiatives shaping the future of the voluntary carbon market alongside initiatives such as the ScienceBased Targets initiative, the Integrity Council for Voluntary Carbon Markets and the Voluntary Carbon Markets Integrity Initiative.

The COP26 climate conference in Glasgow delivered promises to keep the world on the 1.5-degree pathway as well as long-awaited rules for market-based cooperation under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. This cooperation is also available for voluntary carbon market actors. Ain Glasgow, the Nordic Dialogue on Voluntary Compensation convened timely discussions on the role of voluntary carbon markets in the global net-zero transition.
